WESTERN HERBAL MEDICINE

Herbal medicine (also known as Botanical Medicine or Phytotherapy) harnesses the healing power of plants for medicinal purposes and is considered the oldest and most universal form of medicine in the world. For millennia every culture around the world has used plant medicine for healing because it works and is a powerful healing modality and preventative medicine. It is no surprise that scientific investigation is now confirming the traditional uses of many medicinal plants.

As many as 120 pharmaceuticals drugs are originally derived from plants. The best known example is salicylic acid extracted from willow bark to make Aspirin which is now copied and synthesised in the laboratory. Instead of isolating the active medicinal component of the plant, herbalists use whole plant extracts, which makes the medicine safer than pharmaceuticals and gives them more healing properties due to their complexity. These multiple healing actions make them effective in treating a wide range of conditions with a very low incidence of side effects.

Herbs are amazing allies in so many ways, providing us with food, medicine, natural skincare and emotional healing. The most common wild weeds that surround us in abundance, such as dandelion, nettle, plantain and yarrow, are here for us to utilise for our healing and nourishment. Alone these few humble plants are packed with phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals and medicinal actions that support digestion, skin health, hormonal balance, circulation, reproductive organs and the immune system. Fortunately, a revival in herbal medicine is now gaining momentum as more people are waking up to the power and potential of plants to heal themselves and prevent illness.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HERBAL MEDICINE ?

Herbs are suitable for everyone. There are many herbs that can be safely given to children and the elderly. They can be used alone or in many cases alongside orthodox medications. Herbs can be used symptomatically for acute situations, but for more chronic conditions they can be given over a longer period of time to help restore the balance and functioning of the whole body.

HERBAL MEDICINE CONSULTATION

The initial consultation typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes . This allows me to explore your specific health concerns and take a comprehensive case history, including your current health picture, past history and family history. This may also include a physical examination. If you have previous blood tests or investigations I will review them and may request further diagnostic tests including blood, urine or stool analysis.

Once an assessment has been made I will create a personalised treatment plan which includes a herbal prescription. Internal medicines may include liquid tinctures, medicinal teas, powered herbs, capsules, syrups, juices, nutritional supplements or flower essences. If indicated external preparations may include creams, ointments, oils, compresses and baths. Dietary advice and lifestyle recommendations will also be given.

Follow up appointments are 30 to 45 minutes to monitor your treatment progress and possibly adjust your prescription.
